My values and principles
I have observed in groups and within myself that if our intentions are the most respectful of ourselves and others, they will be a very supportive engine of change for our lives.
For me, intention is one of the founding principles of therapy, and here are some principles I try to employ. Since we're all on the same boat, the same planet, every intention, thought, and action has a consequence, whether beneficial or not.
On some level, we are all interdependent on each other, so for this to happen in harmony, it requires respecting each other.
To do this, we all come to the same conclusion: that when we love ourselves, others, the life around us, nature, the planet, it leads us towards harmony.
By beginning and continuing therapy, we are serving others, since by definition, when one person suffers, everyone suffers.
What I have found is that the more we serve others (as long as it does not harm ourselves or others) the more benefits will be brought into our lives.
The more aware we are of the influence, or even control, of our mind, of the quality of the content of our thoughts and our belief systems, the more power we will have over our lives.
When we accept the process of mental and physical discomfort, cultivating patience and welcoming the emptiness of silence, listening to what is happening inside, the closer we will be to our true needs, far from fear and limitations.
When we achieve a goal it is wise to do so in the most responsible way possible.
I will end with this Native American legend of the hummingbird:
One day, the legend goes, there was a huge forest fire. All the animals, terrified and dismayed, watched helplessly as the disaster raged. Only the little hummingbird was active, fetching a few drops with its beak to throw on the fire. After a while, the armadillo, annoyed by this ridiculous commotion, said to it: "Hummingbird! Aren't you crazy? You're not going to put out the fire with these drops of water!"
And the hummingbird replied, "I know, but I'm doing my part."
